An under-trial prisoner (UTP) allegedly committed suicide in Baripada Circle Jail in Mayurbhanj. 

The deceased UTP has been identified as Rabi Singh (21), son of Thepra Singh, a resident of Mahulia village under Sadar Police limits. 

According to sources, Rabi Singh was arrested and brought to Baripada Circle Jail on December 20. He had since been under severe mental stress. He was being counselled by a psychiatrist in the jail.  On Sunday, he attempted to end his life by hanging himself from a railing with his towel. When he was spotted, he was immediately rescued and rushed to Baripada hospital. However, he was pronounced received dead. 

Meanwhile, the family of the deceased alleged that the victim was murdered inside the jail. 

When asked, the jailor of Baripada Circle Jail, Madhusmita Sethi said, “He was arrested in a liquor case and was brought to the jail on December 20. He had been under mental stress since his arrival. Our psychiatrist was counseling him. He attempted suicide at around 6 pm on Sunday. On being spotted, he was immediately rescued and rushed to the hospital. There, the doctor declared him received dead.”
When asked about the allegations of murder, the jailor said, “I can’t say anything about that. The post-mortem report will confirm the reason for his death."
