A pall of gloom descended on Dabari village under Kantabanji police station in Bolangir district after a man allegedly died by suicide following the death of his wife. 

The deceased has been identified as Godhama Mallick (45).

According to sources, Mallick’s wife, identified as Chandrakala, was suffering from kidney ailment for a long time. She died after prolonged illness on Sunday. 

Mallick was unable to cope with his wife’s death and was under severe mental stress. Mallick committed suicide by hanging himself in a nearby forest, sources informed.

“Mallick’s wife was suffering from kidney ailments since the last four-five years and was under medication. Despite all efforts by Mallick, his wife died on Sunday night. Unable to bear the loss, Mallick took the extreme step,” said Loknath Thapa, local sarpanch.

Meanwhile, the police have registered two unnatural death cases in connection with the incident and started an investigation into the matter.

“We have registered two separate unnatural death cases. A scientific team will be engaged in the investigation to ascertain if there was any foul play. The cause of death can only be ascertained after we get the post-mortem report,” said Gouranga Charan Sahoo, Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Kantabanji.
