A major fraud case has come to light in Jagatsinghpur’s Balikuda area, where two women allegedly duped several people of more than Rs 80 lakh. The two women allegedly took money from these people on the pretext of arranging loans.

A major fraud case has come to light in Jagatsinghpur’s Balikuda area, where two women allegedly duped several people of more than Rs 80 lakh. The two women allegedly took money from these people on the pretext of arranging loans. 

Acting on multiple complaints, Balikuda police arrested the accused on Thursday. They have been identified as Rita Das of Gurujanga village in Khordha district and Pramila Barik of Borikina village under Balikuda police limits.

As per sources, the accused defrauded women in Balikuda and Jagatsinghpur by promising loans from Andhra Pradesh’s Swarnakeswar Agency. After collecting large sums, they went into hiding and later issued threats when repayment was demanded. 

Victims alleged that the duo operated in groups, collected money through both cash and online transactions, and even took security deposits and copies of personal documents.

Victims Narrate Their Ordeal

One of the complainants said, “I paid them in instalments of Rs 5,000 through cash and online apps over two years. In total, I gave them Rs 40 lakh. Despite repeated visits to Khordha, they never returned the money and instead threatened us. Finally, I sought police help.”

Another complainant shared, “They convinced us with claims of genuine loans. I paid Rs 1.5 lakh in instalments ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000. When asked to return the amount, they kept delaying.”

A third victim alleged, “They collected security deposits, Rs 5,000 for a Rs 1 lakh loan and Rs 25,000 for a Rs 5 lakh loan. They also took photocopies of Aadhaar, voter ID, PAN, and bank details.”

Ajinkya Mane, SDPO of Jagatsinghpur, confirmed, “On September 11, a case under 424/25 was registered at Balikuda Police Station. Based on that, two accused, Rita Das from Khordha and Pramila Barik from Jagatsinghpur, were arrested. They lured people with promises of low-interest loans and took money from them.”
