Two persons lost their lives in two separate mishaps during nor'wester rain in Nayagarh district on Tuesday.

Thunderstorm on Tuesday evening reportedly wreaked havoc causing damage to trees in Khandapada area in Nayagarh. A branch of a tree broke off and fell on an auto-rickshaw at Khalisahi killing a woman inside the vehicle.

The husband of the deceased said, “They were returning home in an auto-rickshaw when thunderstorm started. They stopped in the way for some time. But again started their journey after some time when a branch of a tree fell on the auto rickshaw killing my wife.”

Three other woman passengers who were travelling in the same auto-rickshaw sustained grievous injuries in the mishap.

Following the mishap, the injured were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Nayagarh.

In another incident, an ice cream vendor was killed in a similar fashion in front of Kishore Chandra High School under Gania Police limits.

The deceased has been identified as Nabha Khatua from Madhabereni village under Khandapada Police Station.

Sources said, Khatua took shelter under a mango tree in front of the school during the nor'wester rain. However, a branch from the tree snapped and fell, crushing Khatua under it. Locals called the fire brigade, who rescued him and took him to the nearest hospital where the doctors pronounced him dead.
