The State Transport Authority (STA) on Tuesday withdrew the power of Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASI), Traffic to collect fines and issue E-challans under the Motor Vehicles Act in Odisha.

Henceforth, Traffic ASIs can neither collect fines nor issue e-challans and penalise traffic violators, the STA stated.

The direction came in the wake of several allegations about traffic police personnel collecting fines illegally from bikers.

In a letter to all the regional and Additional Regional Transport Officers of Rairangpur, Barbil and Khurda, the STA withdrew its previous order enabling the traffic police to collect fines.

Worth mentioning, earlier, on September 13, the STA had issued directives that traffic ASIs could deduct fines and issue e-challans against those violating traffic rules.
