Tiger census begins in Odisha’s Mahanadi Wildlife Sanctuary

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Tiger census begins at Mahanadi Wildlife Sanctuary, Odisha, focusing on Kushang forest in Boudh. Utilising trap cameras and field teams, the survey includes other wildlife like leopards and elephants.

Tigress in Odisha forest

The counting of tigers has officially commenced in Odisha’s Mahanadi Wildlife Sanctuary, with a focus on the Kushang forest range located in Boudh district. The census operation is being conducted across 11 designated forest beats, which include the Kushang, Shripaju, and Sheetalpani forest sections. To support the accurate monitoring of tiger presence, officials have made arrangements for the observation and recording of footprints at various strategic locations throughout the sanctuary.

Use of Technology and Field Teams

As part of the census methodology, trap cameras have been installed at carefully selected spots, while monitoring points have been established every 40 metres, following the standard PIP (Pug Impression Points) system. This systematic approach allows for detailed tracking of tiger movements. A specialised team has been deployed to carry out the fieldwork, consisting of three recorders responsible for documentation, along with 33 forest department employees working together to ensure the successful execution of the census.

Collection of Samples and Broader Wildlife Census

During the counting process, the team is also collecting important biological samples, including tiger footprints, faeces, and other habitat indicators such as tree scratch marks. These samples assist in confirming the presence and movement of the tigers within the sanctuary.

Furthermore, the census is not limited to tigers alone; it includes a comprehensive survey of other significant wildlife species inhabiting the area. These species include leopards, hyenas, jackals, foxes, bears, jungle cats, otters, spotted deer, elephants, and Indian bison. This wide-ranging census aims to provide an updated and detailed overview of the diverse fauna within the Mahanadi Wildlife Sanctuary, contributing to ongoing conservation efforts.
