Around 200 to 300 ineligible persons hold ration cards in every block across all 30 districts of Odisha, said Minister of Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Krushna Chandra Patra while re-appealing such persons to surrender their cards before January 31. He warned of strict action if the ineligible consumers failed to return their ration cards by January 31.

Speaking to media persons, the Minister revealed that the state government had already identified this alarming number of illegal ration card holders in the state. He also said that many of these ineligible beneficiaries were financially well-off and had no reason to avail ration benefits.

“200 to 300 people in every block hold ration cards. Many of such persons pay income tax and are even government employees,” stated Krushna Chandra Patra.

The minister highlighted this statistic while stating that the e-KYC process for availing ration cards in Odisha will be completed by January 31 and eligible beneficiaries will be listed thereafter. However, those who continue to hold ration cards illegally after the end of this month will face punitive action.

Incidentally, this marked the second consecutive day that Minister Patra appealed to all illegal ration card holders. During a media interaction yesterday, he had asked all ineligible beneficiaries to surrender their ration cards before January 31, ensuring that no action will be taken against them if they comply.

Along these lines, the minister also issued a stern warning to ‘dishonest millers’. He stated that millers who deduct excess quantities or do not adhere to rules have been served show-cause notices. Moreover, those who fail to follow government regulations and insist on continuing outdated practices will not be allowed to operate under the new policies.

What are the penalties for holding an illegal ration card?

Penalties for holding an illegal ration card can range from fines to imprisonment, as per the Public Distribution System (Control) Order, 2001. The penalties and legal actions are determined by the state government and may involve criminal proceedings in cases of fraud.
