Terror threat to Puri Srimandir! Threatening graffiti sparks fresh security concerns

Security concerns have mounted in the pilgrim town of Puri after threatening messages, hinting at a possible terrorist attack on Srimandir, were discovered on the wall of a temple near the Balisahi entrance of the Heritage Corridor (Parikrama Prakalpa) Marg on Wednesday.

The disturbing graffiti, seen in two locations on the wall of the Budhi Maa Thakurani temple, also contained the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, raising alarm among locals and authorities.

According to eyewitnesses, the messages included statements such as ‘Terrorists will destroy the temple’, along with multiple phone numbers and instructions to ‘call’.

Phrases like ‘Kula Budiba’ and ‘terrorists’ were also prominently written. In addition to the writings, miscreants allegedly damaged several decorative lights installed in the area, adding to the sense of insecurity.

The incident occurred in the southern stretch of the Parikrama Marg, which is continuously monitored by several CCTV cameras and staffed by security guards. However, locals have expressed concern over how such threatening graffiti could be written in a highly sensitive zone without being noticed.

This is not the first time questions have been raised over the effectiveness of Srimandir’s security measures. The Union Home Ministry and the National Security Guard (NSG), on multiple occasions, recommended tightening the temple’s security apparatus. Yet, several CCTV cameras installed along the Parikrama Marg allegedly remain non-functional.

Residents allege that the expensive security infrastructure, costing crores of rupees, was installed largely for ‘show’ rather than genuine surveillance. Police have launched an investigation to identify the culprits, while security agencies are reviewing footage from operational cameras to identify the suspects.

The incident has renewed calls for immediate action to ensure foolproof security for one of India’s most revered shrines.
