KV Singh Deo on Tata Power Smart Meter dispute
Amidst the growing resentment over Tata Power’s insistence on installing smart meters, Odisha’s Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister, Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo on Saturday stated that embracing technological advancements such as smart meters is in alignment with directives from the Government of India.
Singh Deo encouraged those dissatisfied with the new smart meters to submit written grievances. He assured that existing conventional meters will undergo testing to address consumer apprehensions.
“Mere verbal complaints are not sufficient," said Singh Deo while claiming that many consumers fail to practice efficient energy use which could be a reason for high power consumption and bills.

“Behavioral habits such as leaving chargers plugged in even when mobiles are not charging and neglecting to turn off switches for which current keeps on passing. Such lapses contribute to unnecessary power consumption,” said the Minister while appealing public to adopt mindful electricity usage to mitigate wastage.
Tata Power on Smart Meters in Odisha
Following widespread protests and allegations of excess electricity bills, Tata Power authorities had earlier stated that smart meters are safe and reliable. The smart meters provide real-time data on electricity usage, help detect power theft and ensure accurate billing. There is no reason for consumers to fear getting cheated.
The advanced technology in the meters reduces human error and makes electricity management more efficient, the Company had earlier said.
