Odisha Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja has directed various departments to take immediate steps through field functionaries to prevent and control dengue and other Vector Borne Diseases. Emphasis is placed on coordinated efforts, including urban task forces and school awareness programs, particularly during the monsoon season.

Odisha Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja on Friday directed various departments to take appropriate steps through field functionaries for the prevention and control of dengue and other Vector Borne Diseases (VBDs).

In a letter to various departments, the Odisha Chief Secretary stated that immediate control and prevention measures are of paramount importance to reduce morbidity and mortality due to dengue and other VBDs.

“During the monsoon and post monsoon period, outbreak of vector borne diseases (VBDs) such as Dengue and Malaria are likely to increase. Further, occasional spells of rainfall can also result in an unprecedented case rise. Moreover, dengue possesses a significant public health challenge due to its rapid spread and potential severity. Addressing dengue requires coordinated efforts at every level,” the letter read.

The Housing and Urban development Department has been asked to constitute Urban task force teams and regular urban body meetings in coordination with district health officials to plan for preventive measures for Vector Borne Disease control programme. Weekly fixed cleaning operation day in urban and peri-urban areas and management of unused tyres, old motor vehicles at work site to prevent water stagnation along with other measures.

The School and Mass Education Department has been instructed to sensitize the school children in school assembly and class through headmasters and school principals.

Discussion on vector borne diseases and their preventive measures in school assembly is needed. The officials have been asked for proper solid waste management to eliminate mosquito breeding sources and removal of plastic bags, cups, containers, coconut shells, and use of bed nets by boarders of residential schools.
