Sustainable Move: Odisha to induct 200 more e-buses

The Odisha government has announced plans to significantly expand the fleet of electric buses (e-buses) across the state in a major push towards green and sustainable transport.

According to Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushnachandra Mahapatra, the state government will introduce 200 new e-buses in the coming days, complementing the Centre’s support of 400 e-buses for Odisha under the Prime Minister’s scheme.

In total, around 600 e-buses are expected to be deployed for public service across the state in phases.

At present, the requirement for Odisha has been estimated at 1,000 e-buses, reflecting the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions and modernize the state’s transport infrastructure. The minister highlighted that the introduction of these buses will not only help in protecting the environment but also improve commuting facilities for citizens, especially in urban areas.

“We need to run more electric buses to keep the environment clean. Our government is going to procure 200 more e-buses. PM Modi also gave 400 e-buses to Odisha. This makes 600. And we already have 400 buses,” Mahapatra said.

As part of the first phase, 25 e-buses are being introduced in Sambalpur, marking the beginning of the state’s e-mobility journey. Gradually, the service will be expanded to other districts to ensure widespread accessibility.

Mahapatra emphasized that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to tackling climate change and providing citizens with affordable, eco-friendly transport solutions. Officials said detailed planning is underway to determine routes, charging infrastructure, and district-wise allocation of buses.
