Students caned at private tutorial in Odisha’s Angul; probe ordered 

At a time when corporal punishment has long been banned at educational institutions, students were caned mercilessly at a private coaching centre at Sapoisahi village under Chhendipada Police limits of Angul district. 

The matter came to the fore on Saturday after a purported video of the incident went viral on social media. In the video, it can be seen that an employee of the institution is thrashing students one by one. 

Investigation revealed that the employees of the institution are forcing the students to get up early in the morning. Those who disobeyed the directives were thrashed. 

Taking serious note of the incident, the Angul District Child Welfare Committee has directed a probe into the incident. 

“After watching the viral video, we have informed the child line team. A team from the district child welfare committee will also visit the institution. We will create awareness among students about the availability of the child helpline number 1098. We will ask them to inform the child line whenever they are subjected to any kind of torture. If they inform the child line, appropriate action will be taken against the culprits,” said a member of the Angul district Child Welfare Committee, Kalyan Kishore Mohanty.
