Bodies buried at the village cremation ground in Bhadrak district are reportedly going missing one after another. Though it may sound strange, it is happening, leaving the villagers in a state of fear and apprehension.

The incidents of the disappearance of dead bodies are being reported from Maninathpur village under Bhandaripokhari block in Bhadrak district.

The village’s cremation ground is located on the north of the Baitarani River. So far, three dead bodies have reportedly gone missing from there. Two months ago, Srikanta Behuria had died. Some 20 days ago, two villagers named Akshaya Behera and Dinabandhu Nath passed away. Then the relatives of the deceased had performed their last rites at the cremation ground and buried the bodies.

Surprisingly enough, these bodies have gone missing from the cremation ground.

“Today morning, I found my father’s body missing. We are at a loss. We don’t know who has disinterred the body. But we want justice,” said Bijay Kumar Behera, son of the deceased.

“It can’t be the act of wild animals. In that case, the animals would have left the place without putting the dug up soil on the burial as it was earlier. These incidents have caused fear among the villagers,” said Manmath Kumar Das, a villager.

It was some children who first spotted the burial ground having been dug up and informed the villagers. The villagers rushed to the spot and found the incident to be true. According to them, similar incident had occurred some years ago when two dead bodies including the one of a village teacher identified as Basudeb Das were found missing from their burials.

The villagers suspect it to be the act of any black magician. Some alleged it to be the act of a racket that is supplying bead bodies to the labs of medical colleges.

Meanwhile, the terrified family members have lodged a police complaint and the cops have launched an investigation as well. But the villagers are still in fear.

When contacted, Dhamnagar SDPO Bijay Kumar Mohapatra said, “After receiving the complaints, I visited the spot and found the burial spots having been dug up. It is too early to say anything about the case. Our investigation is underway. It will take some time to crack the mystery.”
