Ranging from ancient monuments and architectural masterpieces to natural wonders and wildlife sanctuaries, our country boasts a vibrant cultural and historical heritage. Every state has its own beauty and diverse heritage.
Maharashtra has the maximum number of UNESCO sites with wonders like the Ajanata Caves, Ellora Caves, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai, and Elephanta Caves.
Maharashtra is followed by Karnataka with four UNESCO sites including the Western Ghats. Karnataka boasts of the stunning Group of Monuments at Hampi, Group of Monuments at Pattadakal, Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas, and the Western Ghats.
After Karnataka, comes Rajasthan with four sites including the Hill Forts, Keoladeo National Park, Jantar Mantar, and Jaipur City. Gujarat also boasts of four UNESCO sites including the Rani Ki Vav (The Queen’s Stepwell), the Historic City of Ahmedabad, Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, and Dholavira.
Similarly, Uttar Pradesh has the stunning Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and the Fatehpur Sikri while Madhya Pradesh has the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, Buddhist Monuments at Sanchi, and Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka.
Delhi also has three sites including the Red Fort Complex, Qutub Minar and its Monuments, and Humayun’s Tomb. There are three sites in Assam including the Kaziranga National Park, Manas Wildlife Sanctuary, and Moidams – the Mound-Burial System of the Ahom Dynasty.
Bihar has two UNESCO sites including the Mahabodhi Temple complex at Bodh Gaya and Ancient Nalanda Mahavihara (Nalanda University). Odisha also has some stunning UNESCO world heritage sites that are Konark Sun Temple, the Ekamra Kshetra (Tentative), and the Chilika Lake (Tentative).
