PCCF (Wildlife) Susanta Nanda in a presser
Amid allegations that a leopard was recently killed and the animal’s meat was eaten by the poachers in the Nuapada district, PCCF (Wildlife) Susanta Nanda appealed to the people of Odisha on Wednesday to socially boycott such wrongdoers with a gruesome mindset.
In the incident that took place on November 16, there was an outcry over the hunting and consumption of the leopard's meat, which prompted a reaction from the PCCF. He has called for the social ostracisation of those involved in the poaching activity.
“Whether it is a Royal Bengal Tiger or a common leopard, the animals hunt a human being under a difficult situation. However for the first time, humans have resorted to hunting a leopard to consume its meat,” the senior forest official Nanda stated.
“Such acts have no place in a civic society. There is no serious offence and unsocial act than a ‘tiger being killed’ to consume its meat,” the PCCF said while expressing his concern.
Worth mentioning, the leopard's death at Deogaon under the Komna range of Nuapada raised concerns amid recent death of three elephants in the Sambalpur district.
The leopard was electrocuted at Pati Dangar near the village when it came in contact with a live wire trap set up for wild boar hunting. The incident came to the fore on Tuesday and a team of Nuapada forest personnel raided the village, confiscating the leopard’s head, tail, hide, and other body parts. Two persons were arrested in this connection.
“We had laid a trap to catch wild boar and the leopard got electrocuted. The animal came in contact with live wire on the intervening night and we saw it the next morning. We had previously killed a wild boar a few days ago,” an accused Pustam Chinda said.
