A pal of gloom descended on Pipilput village under Koraput’s Machkund police limits on Friday after two minor siblings, a boy and a girl, drowned in a pond.
The deceased have been identified as Jogesh (5) and Santoshi (10).
The mishap happened when the father of the deceased, Jinu Garnayak was working on the field.
As per reports, both Jogesh and his sister Santoshi were playing near the field when they decided to move over to the nearby pond and play there.
A few moments later, Garnayak searched for the siblings, but could not trace them. The villagers were called in for help who launched a frantic search. The villagers found the duo floating in the pond sometime later.
The siblings were immediately rescued from the pond, but it was too late.
The pond was reportedly dug up by the revenue department and officials of the department reached the spot to investigate the incident.
In another incident, a student who scored 86 per cent by securing 519 marks in Matric exam died after drowning in village pond at Srirampur under Charampa panchayat.
The Matric exam result was declared yesterday.
