Odisha is set to witness a major boost in its aviation infrastructure with the Union government announcing the resumption of seaplane operations and the operationalisation of water aerodromes by October.
Union Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu, who chaired a regional review meeting in Bhubaneswar on Monday, confirmed that revised guidelines are already in place to facilitate the process.
The minister said that Odisha had earlier seen seaplane services, but efforts are now being made to reintroduce them under a new framework. He added that the government is working towards modifying the guidelines on how to operationalise water aerodromes by October this year.
The move is expected to improve connectivity to tourist and coastal regions in the state. Naidu added that the Centre is working closely with Odisha on aviation projects, with strong cooperation from the state government.
In the same meeting, Naidu also highlighted the possible upgradation of airstrips in Odisha. The state currently has 20 operational airstrips. Some of these are under review for conversion into full-fledged airports to handle growing air traffic.
The minister said that the expansion will be taken up in coordination with the state government to ensure improved regional connectivity.
To cater to the rising passenger demand, the Union government has approved plans for a third terminal (T-3) at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar. Naidu said the new terminal will not only enhance handling capacity but also showcase Odisha’s art, culture, history, and heritage in its design.
Passengers arriving in Bhubaneswar will thus experience a glimpse of the state’s identity upon arrival. In addition, a new building is under consideration at the site of the old terminal to further upgrade facilities.
Finally, on the long-awaited Puri airport, Naidu clarified that the Union government has already granted in-principle approval, with land and site issues resolved. He said the project’s next step rests with the Odisha government.
The development of Puri airport has been a longstanding demand, especially given the city’s global prominence as a spiritual and cultural destination.
