In yet another achievement, a team of doctors at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack has been able to bring smile on the face of a patient who had lost the thumb of his right hand in an accident. The doctors’ team successfully implanted a finger from his left foot in the patient’s right hand.

The head of plastic surgery department, Dr. Bibhuti Bhusan Nayak, said, “The surgery is the first of its kind in Odisha and at SCB. As the surgery was complex, we brought it before the public today as the patient is out of the danger zone.”

According to Nayak, Sitakant Barik, the patient from Bhadrak district, was stressed after losing his right thumb in an accident while he was working at a spinning mill outside Odisha. Barik had visited SCB some three months back.

“It took us around 10 days to prepare the patient mentally and completing other investigations. There was a loss of thumb of around 9cms and the patient was unable to do any work efficiently,” said Nayak.

Nayak further said the entire operation was complex in nature and there was also huge pressure on the team. “Despite the challenges, a team of eight doctors performed the transplant after a tiring eight hours of efforts,” Nayak added.

“I was working in Tamil Nadu when I lost my thumb. I was disturbed following the mishap. Now I am happy that I will be able to work again,” said Barik.
