The SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack has scripted history by successfully conducting Odisha's first vascularized lymph node transfer surgery on a woman patient from Jajpur district. The rare vascularized lymph node transfer surgery was conducted successfully by a team of doctors at the Plastic Surgery department of SCB.

The 33-year-old woman patient from Jajpur district was kept under observation for 15 days and her condition has shown tremendous improvement, the senior doctors said. As per reports, the woman had been suffering from Filariasis for the last several years.  As her leg was swollen, she was not able to complete her daily work.

The concerned department HOD informed that such surgery started in India some two years back. It is for the first in Odisha and SCB that such a surgery was taken up.

During the process, lymph nodes were taken from different parts of the body of the patient and implanted in the affected leg through microsurgery.

"The condition of the patient has registered around 60 percent improvement. Earlier, symptomatic treatment was provided to affected patients and hence the recurrence was 100 percent. We have been planning for the last six months to conduct such a surgery," said the Head of Plastic Surgery Department.
