At a time when Sambalpur remains on the edge following the outbreak of large-scale violence, Odisha Director General (DG) of Police Sunil Bansal on Saturday claimed that the overall situation in the town is now by and large peaceful.

“There has been some untoward situation in Sambalpur and we have deployed extra police force. The senior police officials are camping there and the overall situation is peaceful,” said Bansal.

The top cop further stated that the prime focus of the department is to ensure that law and order situation prevails and normalcy is restored. Sending a stern message, the Odisha DGP said that action will be taken against those people who have either provoked or involved in the violence in Sambalpur. Asked about sending of additional forces to Sambalpur,

Bansal said that the situation is being assessed and forces will be sent, if required.

At present curfew is in force in areas under six police station jurisdictions as a precautionary measure. The district administration today informed that relaxation in the prohibitory orders will only be allowed from 8 am to 10 am and from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm only to buy essential commodities.

Similarly, the restriction on the internet services has also been extended for another 48 hours by the Odisha Home Department today.

Sambalpur Collector, Ananya Das said that the ban has been enforced to prevent the circulation of various inflammatory videos.
