As many as 21 drivers were apprehended on Saturday night at several places in Bhubaneswar for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Commissionerate Police has registered 21 cases against those drivers and seized as many vehicles.

As per reports, the Bhubaneswar Urban Police District (UPD) conducted the special drive under seven police station areas including Bharatpur, Badagada Laxmisagar, Jatni, Khandagiri, Kharavel Nagar and Saheed Nagar.

Recently, Laxmisagar Police in Bhubaneswar arrested four drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol on February 5.

The drivers were arrested instead of being allowed to go after paying fines because the Commissionerate Police is now adopting a ‘zero tolerance’ policy against drunken driving.

Earlier, such drivers were allowed to go after imposing fines for the violation. But from now onwards, they will be arrested and produced before the court.

On February 1, a car was seen dragging a scooter for at least a kilometer on Patia-Nandankanan road in Bhubaneswar.

As per reports, the car first hit another car on the road and then ran over a woman. When the locals tried to stop the driver, he drove off and dragged a scooter with him.

The owner of the car was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
