Tension prevailed during the 12th council meeting of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) on Wednesday. A face-off like situation cropped up among the corporators of BJP and Congress and the ruling BJD. This came after a group of Congress corporators sat on a dharna when the council meeting was underway.

They raised slogans against Mayor for his alleged dictatorship and other issues including massive corruption. Soon the BJP coporators joined the Congress corporators and staged a demonstration during the CMC council meeting.

The CMC council meeting was disrupted after Mayor and CMC Commissioner walked out following the ruckus created by the opposition corporators.

“It is unfortunate the way the council is functioning. A community health centre was opened but being a corporator, I was not informed. The Mayor left the venue by passing several resolutions in a hurry,” alleged Congress Corporator from ward No 50, Santosh Bhola.

Bhola alleged that there has been massive corruption and announced that the party corporators will oppose the Mo Ward programme in the coming days.

Congress corporators alleged that several houses have been damaged in the recent nor’wester rains. Despite informing the authorities, no step has been taken to address the grievances of the affected people.

Mayor and CMC Commissioner could not be contacted for comments on the ruckus during the council meeting.

“We will raise the issues related to the ward. But Mayor is not ready to listen to the opposition corporators,” said Swarnaprava, Corporator from ward No 41.
