A mega mall in Odisha has been slapped with a fine of Rs 33,000 for Rs 16 which it charged for a carry bag from a consumer. The incident has been reported from Odisha's Bolangir district.

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has slapped a fine of Rs 33,000 on Vishal Mega Mart for charging Rs 16 towards a carry bag.

As per reports, the consumer, identified as Suryakant Bag, had knocked the Court’s door in October last year against the Mart.

“I had gone to the market along with kids for shopping. We purchased goods worth over Rs 2900 and spent over an hour at the Mart. At the counter, they handed over the products without any bag. They told me I would have to purchase a carry bag which cost Rs 16. Later, I filed a case at the Consumer Court,” said Bag.

Bag further said that, “As a consumer, I am happy that if the general public is aware, such things can be avoided.”

Sources said that the concerned Mart is allegedly charging Rs 16 towards carry bags from other consumers despite being fined Rs 33,000 in this case.

When contacted, the store manager said the Delhi head office of the firm will take decision.
