Rs 1500 crore, over 500 km: Odisha govt approves ‘lifeline’ projects for state roads

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

The Odisha Cabinet approved Rs 1,000 crore for disaster-resilient roads and Rs 426 crore for rural upgrades. Projects aim to enhance connectivity during emergencies.

Highways in Odisha

The Odisha Cabinet has approved Rs 1,000 crore to build 500 km of disaster-resilient roads in flood and cyclone-prone regions. Sanctioned under the ‘Mukhya Mantri Sadak Yojana’, the five-year project (2025–2030) aims to ensure uninterrupted connectivity during emergencies.

A press release from the Government of Odisha stated that key planned features of the road include elevated embankments above flood levels, reinforced protection walls, upgraded drainage systems, and high-level bridges replacing submersible ones.

Notably, the roads are being prepared to act as lifelines, enabling swift access for rescue teams and relief supplies during disasters, such as cyclones, which frequently engulf the state and disrupt connectivity.

Rural Roads Upgrade Across 142 Constituencies

In a second scheme, the cabinet approved Rs 426 crore to upgrade rural roads in 142 assembly constituencies over three years. Focused on improving connectivity to schools, hospitals, and markets, the initiative will repair neglected stretches and strengthen infrastructure in remote areas.

The disaster-resilient roads will incorporate stone pitching to prevent erosion, catchwater drains on hillsides, and adequate cross-drainage structures to manage flooding. These measures aim to minimise maintenance costs and extend road longevity in high-risk zones as the new roads are designed to withstand such events, ensuring communities remain connected to emergency services.

Notably, work on both road schemes will begin in 2025–26, with the rural upgrade targeting completion by 2026–27. The government emphasised collaboration with local bodies to prioritise high-impact routes and ensure timely execution.
