The Central government is going to release a special coin of Rs 100 featuring a portrait of former Odisha Chief Minister Dr Harekrushna Mahtab on his 125th birth anniversary.

The Ministry of Culture had sent a proposal to the Ministry of Finance to mint a special coin to perpetuate the memory of the legendary leader from Odisha. The Ministry of Finance has approved the proposal.

This was stated by Union Minister of Culture, Arjun Ram Meghwal while speaking at a ceremony to celebrate Swadhinata Sangrami Divas on Tuesday.

Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab and the son of late Dr Hareskruhna Mahtab informed that the Union Minister said the special coin with denominational value of Rs 100 has already been minted.

“The Ministry of Finance and the PMO have approved it. As I know, the coin will be released soon. The 125th birth anniversary is currently underway and will conclude on November 21,” he added.

Utkal Keshari Harekrushna Mahtab, regarded as the architect of modern Odisha, served as the first Chief Minister from 1946 to 1950, and again from 1956 to 1960.

He is credited with formulating the modern-day contours of Odisha by steering the integration of erstwhile Odia-speaking princely states.
