Rising Baitarani waters force school, anganwadi shutdown in Bhadrak
Rising Baitarani floodwaters have forced the closure of schools and Anganwadi centres in Dhamnagar block of Bhadrak district. By 6 am Monday, the river was flowing at 18.86 metres at Akhuapada Anicut, well above the danger mark of 18.33 metres.
Responding to the situation, the District Collector ordered a two-day closure of all Anganwadi centres in Hasanabad and Arjunpur panchayats, along with 25 schools across Arjunpur, Hasanabad, Sohada, and Padhani panchayats.
Floodwater has entered farmland near Kantighai in the Bhandaripokhari block. In Dhamnagar, water is gushing in through the Mallimahara and Gaurangpur escape points. Several villages are submerged, with three feet of water flooding houses and roads.
Locals complained of worsening conditions. One villager said the floodwater has made life miserable and alleged that no relief packages have reached them yet. People also reported difficulties in getting essential supplies and healthcare.
The district administration is keeping a close watch on the situation. Officials said the safety of residents in the submerged villages is the priority, and relief measures are being prepared.
