Odisha Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra on Tuesday said that the government is planning to come up with some alternative plans to get rid of red lights from traffic posts.

A review meeting in this regard was conducted in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.

Mahapatra also informed that alternative arrangements like overbridges and approach roads will be constructed instead of keeping red lights at the traffic posts. Following this, commuters may not have to wait for hours in the traffic.

Mahapatra further said that a decision in this regard will be taken soon following discussions in the department.

“A common man wants to reach home early after leaving office. However, he is left stranded in the traffic for hours due to congestion. Similarly, one has to leave home two hours earlier to reach office due to the same problem. We will give emphasis on the smooth road communication for the common people. We will make a plan to remove red lights from the traffic posts and make alternative arrangements like construction of overbridges and approach roads,” said the Minister.

In response, road safety worker Subrata Nanda said that it will be tough to be implemented.

“It sounds very good to the ears. However, the red light issue in traffic is not only a problem in the country but also in foreign countries. Overbridges and approach roads could be constructed only when the required place is there. Moreover, proper planning and time factors are also to be ensured. Roads have been encroached and as a result, people are facing traffic problems due to illegal parking. Implementing the alternative arrangements could be a long-run task and it will be tough. It will be a good plan and should be implemented in future. However, encroachments should be cleared near the roads immediately to decongest the traffic,” said Nanda.
