RDC orders probe into sensitive case
A high-level inquiry has been ordered after a shocking incident came to light at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Berhampur, where two newborn babies were reportedly administered oxygen from a single cylinder.
The incident, which recently occurred in the hospital's super-speciality department, has triggered widespread concern over patients’ safety and medical protocol.
Taking serious note of the matter, the Southern Range Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) has directed an immediate investigation into the circumstances that led to the alleged mishandling.
The RDC has also sought a detailed report from the Superintendent of MKCG Medical College, asking for clarification on how such a critical lapse occurred in a government-run tertiary care facility.
“Who is responsible? What led to this gross negligence? Was it a shortage of resources, staff mismanagement, or technical failure? Every angle will be thoroughly probed,” the RDC said, emphasizing that accountability will be fixed.
The incident came to light on Monday when reports emerged that two neonatal were being supplied oxygen simultaneously from one cylinder, a practice that violates standard medical safety norms and can pose grave risks to infant health.
Since the revelation, hospital authorities have come under intense scrutiny, with demands being raised for improved infrastructure, better monitoring mechanisms, and strict compliance with neonatal care protocols.
