Ration Card portal
In a major relief to around 10 lakh families waiting to be brought under the food security net, Odisha once again reopened its online portal on March 1 for ration card applications. This was informed by Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra.
The portal’s reopening is significant for the beneficiaries as it has remained closed since the lead-up to the 2024 General Elections.
“We have successfully eliminated 4 lakh ghost ration card holders from our records. Additionally, income tax payers and employees have voluntarily surrendered their cards, making way for more deserving beneficiaries,” the Minister informed.
“For many families struggling to make ends meet, the portal reopening offers a chance to access vital food subsidies. The online application marks a modern approach to welfare distribution, making it more accessible and transparent for all eligible citizens of Odisha,” the Minister added.
As per reports, at least 6 lakh applications are currently in the pipeline, with another 4 lakh new applications expected soon. Under the combined umbrella of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and the State Food Security Scheme (SFSS), eligible families can access essential food grains and rations.
This initiative represents the government’s commitment to ensuring food security for its most vulnerable citizens. Meanwhile, the Odisha government hopes the portal reopening will help reach those truly in need while maintaining the integrity of the public distribution system (PDS).
