Odisha Police DGP YB Khurania
As the sacred city of Puri gears up for the world-famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, Odisha Police has unveiled an elaborate, tech-enabled security blueprint to ensure the festival’s smooth, peaceful conduct.
Director General of Police (DGP) Y B Khurania on Tuesday said that the security apparatus for the annual festival has been meticulously divided into eight specialised sectors, each tasked with distinct responsibilities to maintain law and order during the massive congregation.
To manage the mammoth crowd and ensure the safety of pilgrims, police teams have been assigned to key operational areas — including traffic management, inner temple security, inner and outer cordon arrangements, crowd control, coastal security, and other strategic deployments.
“This year, a special focus is on integrated coordination and technological upgrades,” Khurania informed reporters.
In a significant first, an Integrated Command and Control Room has been established for the festival. Around 275 AI-powered CCTV cameras have been strategically installed along crucial stretches — from Uttara Chhak to Puri town and the route towards Konark.
These cameras will stream live visuals, monitored round-the-clock by police personnel to track crowd surges, manage traffic, and swiftly respond to emergencies. Sub-control rooms at key points will further bolster real-time monitoring efforts.
To counter emerging aerial threats, anti-drone systems have been deployed along with anti-sabotage teams and dog squads. Coastal security, too, has been fortified with the deployment of Marine Police, Coast Guard units, and the Indian Navy.
Over 200 platoons of Odisha Police will be stationed in and around Puri, supported by eight companies of central paramilitary forces including the BSF, CRPF, RAF, and others.
For the first time, NSG (National Security Guard) snipers will be positioned following a thorough threat assessment. Additionally, police drones will monitor aerial views of the crowd and chariot procession routes.
A real-time chatbot service has also been introduced to guide pilgrims on parking locations, route maps, and traffic updates.
The DGP confirmed that nearly 10,000 personnel, including state police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), and Home Guards, will remain on duty during the festival. Every possible measure is being taken to ensure the centuries-old tradition of Rath Yatra unfolds in an atmosphere of devotion, safety, and order.
“This sacred event draws lakhs of devotees every year. Our collective priority is to ensure the divine journey of the Lords is carried out in absolute peace and security,” Khurania added.
