In a rare sighting, Border Security Force (BSF) jawans stationed at the Gupteswar forest camp in Koraput district rescued a Giant Flying Squirrel from the Ramgiri area and handed it over to the local forest officials.

According to sources, the animal was later examined by a veterinary doctor. Forest officials said that further steps will be taken as per the directions of senior authorities.

Locally known as the ‘Udanta Musa’ (flying rat), the Giant Flying Squirrel is considered one of the rare species found in this region. Wildlife experts said the sighting has brought joy to nature lovers, as the species was seen in the district after many years.

However, they also expressed concern over the declining numbers of the animal due to rampant deforestation and destruction of natural habitats. Conservationists stressed that protection of forests is crucial for the survival of such rare species in Koraput.
