Earlier, one Rajya Sabha seat from Odisha had fallen vacant following the resignation of Mamata Mohanta on July 31, 2024.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday announced the schedule for the bye-elections to the Council of states from various states including the one Rajya Sabha seat from Odisha.

At present, there are 12 casual vacancies in the Council of States from 9 states. The ECI has decided to conduct 12 separate bye-elections for the vacant Rajya Sabha seats.

Earlier, one Rajya Sabha seat from Odisha had fallen vacant following the resignation of Mamata Mohanta on July 31, 2024. Her term was scheduled to expire in April 2026. After resigning as Rajya Sabha MP and from the primary membership of the BJD, Mamata Mohanta had subsequently joined the BJP.

Date of poll: September 3, 2024

As per the ECI notification, the polling will be conducted from 9 am to 4 pm and the counting of votes will be held same day from 5 pm onwards.
