Family of the deceased plunges into grief
A rabid dog attack in Chinchera village under Tushura police limits, Bolangir district, has claimed two lives, plunging the community into mourning. The victims, identified as 33-year-old Jogendra Chhatria, a national-level para-athlete, and 48-year-old Hrushikesh Rana, died late last night while undergoing treatment at VIMSAR Medical College and Hospital in Burla.
According to sources, the incident took place on July 23, when a rabid dog went on a rampage in Chinchera, attacking six villagers in separate incidents over the course of the day. Panic spread through the locality as the animal bit people without provocation, leaving several seriously injured.
All six victims were initially rushed to the Bolangir district headquarters hospital and later referred to Burla for advanced treatment. Reports also added that the victims included children who were passing by the stretch to commute to school.
While four of the victims eventually recovered and returned home, Chhatria and Rana’s conditions remained critical despite continued medical care. Hospital sources confirmed that both men succumbed late Saturday night.
Unfortunately, Chhatria, a person with disabilities, was well-known in the region for his achievements in para-athletics at the national level, making his death particularly poignant. Locals informed that he used to represent India in international floorball contests. Meanwhile, Rana, a farmer, was remembered by villagers as a helpful and cheerful man.
As of the last reports, the district administration has not released any statements on the matter, nor has it taken action on the growing dog menace.
