Street vendors evicted from 'Bada Danda' demand rehabilitation
Scores of street vendors in the city of Puri on Monday gathered in protest outside the District Collector's Office, seeking an allocation of vending spaces in high-footfall areas frequented by tourists and pilgrims. Despite their removal from Bada Danda (Grand Road) more than a year ago, the vendors lament that no alternative arrangements have been made for their relocation.
The vendors have highlighted their plight through various forms of protest, including a sustained sit-in lasting 75 days and a three-day hunger strike. They asserted that their requests have largely gone unheard, necessitating today’s massive demonstration.
“We want permanent rehabilitation. The vendors usually used to earn a living by selling various items at Bada Danda and sea beach. We were promised rehabilitation within two months when we were evicted. It is now over 14 months that the vendors are yet to be rehabilitated. We will intensify our protest and oppose the visit of leaders and ministers in Puri,” said Priyadarshan, a leader.
The ongoing protest underscores the struggle of street vendors, who play a vital role in the local economy but often face challenges due to urban planning and regulatory changes. The traders are hoping that their protest will lead to tangible action and resolution from the local authorities, said a local.
The outcome of these protests remains to be seen as the vendors continue to await a response from the relevant officials, he added.
“I had a small shop near Bada Danda. When there was rise in inflow of devotees, the previous government had come up with a project. We had thought that the rise in the number of devotees would help us to do a good business. The previous administrative officials had assured to rehabilitate us at a place where devotees movement will be more,” said a vendor.
