Law Minister Harichandan speaking to media
The recent deaths and injuries of devotees during the 9-day annual sojourn (Rath Yatra) in Puri pilgrimage town were not caused by any delay in the ‘Pahuda’ ritual of the sibling deities, Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said on Monday.
The Minister dismissed speculation of ritual conflict and assured a timely probe into the fatal mishap with clear accountability.
According to sources, Law Minister Harichandan clarified that the fatal stampede during the sacred ritual at Saradhabali in Puri was not a result of any delay in the conduct of the Pahuda ritual, which had concluded on time. The subsequent daily rituals (Nitikanti) were also conducted as per the schedule.
“There was no need to disturb Mahaprabhu Jagannath and unnecessarily keep Him restless (Anidra) the whole night,” the Law Minister stated, dismissing concerns over alleged ritual confusion or mismanagement. “There is no conflict regarding Pahuda,” he asserted.
Regarding the stampede, the Minister informed that action has already been initiated based on preliminary findings. The Development Commissioner, Anu Garg, has been directed to complete a full inquiry within 30 days. “If negligence by any official is found, strict action will follow,” Harichandan warned.
The Minister added that a detailed probe would also focus on preventing similar occurrences in the future. “The direction of the probe will be forward-looking, ensuring that such mishaps are avoided during upcoming rituals and festivals,” the Minister said.
The statement comes amid public concern and scrutiny over the Puri stampede during one of Odisha's most significant religious events, observed by millions.
“After the Nitikantis were over, the Pahuda ritual was performed. Why is there any confusion over the Pahuda?” the Law Minister questioned.
