Puri mourns the loss of Ranarnaba Deb, known as 'Thata Raja', the younger brother of Puri Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, who passed away at 67 after a prolonged illness. His final rites will be at Swargadwar.

Holy city of Puri is in mourning following the demise of Ranarnaba Deb, popularly known as the 'Thata Raja', a revered figure in the Gajapati royal household and the younger brother of Puri Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb.  As per reports, Ranarnaba Deb passed away late Sunday night at the age of 67 after suffering from a prolonged illness.

According to sources, Ranarnaba Deb was suffering from health issues for some time. His condition worsened in recent days, and he succumbed to a cardiac arrest, leaving behind a legacy intertwined with the rituals and royal traditions of the Jagannath Temple.

Wave of grief sweeps across Puri

News of his passing spread rapidly across Puri and beyond, casting a somber mood over the city known for its deep spiritual roots. Locals, temple servitors, and dignitaries have expressed their sorrow, remembering him as a quiet yet dignified presence in the royal family.

Final rites at Swargadwar

Following traditional rites observed by the royal family, his final cremation will take place at Swargadwar, the sacred cremation ground in Puri. Arrangements are already underway, and a large number of people are expected to pay their final respects.

"Thata Raja” Ranarnaba Deb was a very simple and loving person. He passed away from a cardiac arrest after a prolonged illness. We are finding it difficult to express our grief in words. His last rites will be performed at Puri Swargadwar today as per the Hindu rituals," said a relative.
