The depression over the Southeast and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to move west-north-westwards and intensify into a deep depression by December 2 and further into a cyclonic storm over the Southwest Bay of Bengal around December 3, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday. 

The cyclonic storm is likely to cross South Andhra Pradesh adjacent to Tamil Nadu coasts between Chennai and Machilipatnam around the evening of December 4. 

“Under its impact, south coastal districts like Ganjam, Gajapati, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Rayagada are likely to experience windy conditions on December 5. Fishermen are also advised not to venture into the sea from December 5 due to probable turbulent sea conditions. From December 3, some places of Southern Odisha districts like Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, and Gajapati are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall,” said Umashankar Dash, weather scientist.

Some Odisha districts are likely to witness light to moderate rain or thundershowers from December 3. Yellow and orange warnings have been issued for some districts for December 4 and 5 by the IMD.

Dry weather very likely to prevail over the districts of Odisha

Day-3 (Valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 03.12.2023 to 0830 Hrs IST of 04.12.2023)

Light to moderate rain/ thundershower very likely to occur at a few places over the districts Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapti,Ganjam at one or two places over the rest districts of coastal Odisha, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and dry weather very likely to prevail over the rest districts of Odisha.

Day-4: (Valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 04.12.2023 to 0830 Hrs IST of 05.12.2023)

Yellow Warning (Be updated)

Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam.

Day-5: (Valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 05.12.2023 to 0830 Hrs IST of 06.12.2023)

Orange warning (Be Prepared)

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam.

Yellow Warning (Be updated)

Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khordha,and Puri.

Fishermen Warnings:

Fishermen are advised not to venture into deep sea areas of southwest Bay of Bengal from 1st December and West Central Bay of Bengal from 2nd December, along & off South Odisha coast from 4th December evening till further notice. Whoever out at sea is advised to return to coast by 1st December, today.

Port Warnings:

Keep Hoisted Distant Cautionary Signal No. – I (DC-1) at all ports of Odisha.
