People across the millennium city of Cuttack were upbeat about President Droupadi Murmu’s visit on Wednesday. However, they were filled with resentment after they learnt that the President's venue at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium was covered with ‘polythene sheets’ as a stopgap arrangement after its roof was reportedly damaged.

President Droupadi Murmu, who is on a three-day visit to her home state Odisha, attended the valedictory function at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack to mark the completion of 75 years of the Orissa High Court.

It is not the first time that the stopgap arrangement at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium has hurt the sentiments of people. Earlier, the matter came to notice during Amit Shah’s programme at the same venue one year back.

Several advocates, who had come to attend the valedictory function also expressed resentment over such callous attitude.

“It was earlier claimed that the roof would be repaired. Even after one year, no step was taken to resolve the issue. We were in shock after seeing that polythene sheets were used to cover the damaged roof. Odisha government has huge funds and the President’s programme was fixed at least two months in advance,” said Advocate Rabindra Nath Pal.

Pal further questioned the intention of the state government on the entire matter.

“Amit Shah during his visit had also urged for immediate repair of the indoor stadium. Today, we are really hurt over the matter,” said Advocate Sishir Chandra Das.

Local resident, Sanjit Samal said, “The President of India, Droupadi Murmu attended an important function at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium. It is really unfortunate as the people, who were in charge during Amit Shah’s programme, had assured to repair the roof. But so far no step has been taken. We are surprised that the renovation work has not been taken up. It is a sheer disrespect to the President of India.”
