Odisha Energy Department
The Odisha Energy Department on Friday issued a clarification regarding a viral news item circulating on social media about the mandatory installation of prepaid smart meters by DISCOMs. The news linked the installation of these meters to a rise in electricity bills, leading to dissatisfaction and confusion among consumers.
Taking to its official X (formerly Twitter), the Odisha Energy department clarified that installation of pre-paid smart meters is not mandatory, and consumers can opt for either pre-paid or post-paid smart meters as per their convenience. The consumers are requested to extend necessary cooperation to the DISCOM officials for the smooth installation of smart meters.
If a static meter has been installed at a consumer's premises and it is functioning properly, it will not be replaced within 5 years of its installation date, the Energy department clarified.
Installation of smart meters, however, not only enhances the overall efficiency and functionality of the electricity distribution system, but also enables the consumers to assess real-time energy consumption and regulate their energy consumption accordingly, according to the Energy department statement.
“It is further clarified that the smart meters being installed by the DISCOMs undergo thorough quality checks and are duly certified by NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories). Therefore, the rumour of a rise in electricity bills due to the installation of smart meters is completely baseless,” the tweet read.
