Scores of depositors in Kenabheta panchayat of Sundargarh district are in deep waters after their deposits worth lakhs of rupees were allegedly siphoned off from their accounts at the Indarpur post office.

The depositors alleged that the postmaster concerned committed financial wrongdoings, and did a vanishing act.

They said that they deposited varied amounts in their postal savings accounts, Sukanya Samridhi Yojana, and recurrent deposits at different times. However, they came to know of the irregularities after checking the details of their accounts at the post office. As per their complaints, only paltry sums are there in their accounts.

A woman depositor said, “I deposited Rs 1 lakh, but only Rs 3000 is left in my account. Recently I deposited Rs 5000 in Sukanya Samridhi Yojana. A total of 1.02 lakh has been siphoned off from my account.”

Another depositor said, "On checking our joint account, Rs 50,000 was found missing.” A depositor, who alleged that Rs 4.03 lakh was siphoned off from his savings account, said that the matter was known after an audit by a postal inspector.
