A special team of the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) on Sunday conducted a surprise raid at reputed sweet shops in the city to check for adulteration.

According to sources, the officials examined the quality of the sweets, the use of artificial colouring, and hygiene standards in the preparation process during the inspection. The team reportedly found more than 50 kg of stale sweets, which were immediately destroyed, sources added.

The raids were carried out on Saturday and Sunday in view of Rakhi Purnima and more than 20 sweet shops were examined to check adulteration and use of artificial food colours. Besides, 70 samples were collected during the search. The enforcement team also directed the sweet shop owners to maintain hygiene.

Earlier, use of synthetic colour in the sauce manufacturing had come to light in the city.

The raid was part of BeMC’s ongoing drive to ensure food safety and maintain public health ahead of the festive season. Authorities have warned that strict action will be taken against shops found selling substandard or adulterated food items.
