Politics intensifies over prevailing potato crisis in Odisha

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

With the short supply of potatoes, prices have skyrocketed in Odisha, leading to a political row. BJD leader Sambit Routray criticises the BJP government for the crisis, while Congress leader Bijay Patnaik demands an investigation into the failed Potato Mission. BJP leader Surath Biswal blames the previous government and assures efforts to resolve the issue.

Potato crisis again in Odisha

Due to the short supply of potatoes, the price of this essential kitchen item has skyrocketed in Odisha pinching the pockets of the common men. As a result, political row has intensified in the State over the prevailing crisis.

Targeting the newly formed BJP government, BJD leader Sambit Routray said that the potato crisis occurred just once or twice during the tenure of the Naveen Patnaik government. However, the crisis occurred as soon as BJP came to power.

“During the long tenure of Naveen Patnaik government, potato crisis had occurred only once or twice. However, the crisis occurred as soon as this (BJP) government came. As a result, consumers are suffering. Hopefully, the crisis will be solved soon. Though the Supply Minister is giving so many statements, nothing has happened yet,” said Routray.

Meanwhile, Congress said that though 14 lakh tons of potatoes are required in Odisha, the State produces only four lakh tons of potatoes.

“BJD government had started the Potato Mission in 2016. An investigation should be launched by the current government on why the mission failed,” said Congress leader Bijay Patnaik.

In reply, BJP said that the prevailing potato crisis is not of recent times. The crisis occurred due to the fault of the previous government and it will take time to rectify it.

“The potato crisis occurred due to the fault of the previous government. It can’t be solved in one day. It will take time to rectify the mistakes. BJP government is leaving no stone unturned to solve the crisis. Farmers will be encouraged to take up Potato farming and cold stores will be set up to deal with the issue,” said BJP leader Surath Biswal.
