In what could be a cause for grave concern for the Forest department and wildlife lovers, an elephant was allegedly poached for its tusks in the Baisipalli forest under the Dasapalla range of Nayagarh district. 

As per reports, it is suspected that poachers hunted the tusker by laying electric wires and later cut off its tusks after its death. 

Meanwhile, the Forest department rushed to the spot and started an investigation into the alleged poaching of the animal.

The Nayagarh Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), the Deputy Conservator of Forests(DCF), and a joint task force are carrying out the probe. As per sources, forest officials have detained three persons who are being interrogated in connection with the matter.

The two tusks have been seized, said sources.
