Over 50 persons, mostly women and children, were taken ill hours after they consumed ice creams in three villages of Koraput district on Saturday.

As per initial reports, all the affected persons are from Baliguda, Ghataguda and Budhari villages. Sources said that the villagers had consumed the ice creams sold by a trader. Later, they complained of vomiting, stomach ache and loose motion in the night.

All of them were subsequently rushed to Sunabeda and Mathalput hospitals.

Budhari Sarpanch said, “All the women and children had consumed ice creams and later we had to rush them to the hospital after they complained of illness.”

The Sarpanch further demanded an investigation into the alleged sale of spurious ice creams.

Pottangi MLA Pritam Padhi said, “I got information about the incident in the wee hours and visited the Sunabeda hospital. Some trader had sold the ice creams and those who consumed it were subsequently taken ill.”

The MLA said that the persons from three villages have been affected and 20 of them have been discharged after treatment.
