Odisha is currently witnessing an unprecedented development as far as railway infrastructure is concerned. In the past 11 years, major projects have been executed in the state by the Indian Railways .
All this has been possible due to constant assistance, enhanced budgetary allocation for Odisha by the NDA-led BJP government at the Centre.
Between 2009 and 2014, Odisha was allocated around Rs 838 crore every year towards the development of railways in the budget. But it was increased to Rs 10,599 crore in the financial year 2025-26. The increase in railway budget allocation for Odisha is now over 12.5 percent more, said the Ministry of Railways.
From the period between 2009 and 2014, only 53 km of new railway tracks were laid per year. However, it has now been increased to 186 km per year.
Since 2014, 2046 km of new railway tracks have been laid in Odisha, which is more than Malaysia’s entire rail network.
During 2009 to 2014, an average of 29 km of rail tracks underwent electrification. Now it has been increased to 138 km per year. So far, 1516 km of railway track has been electrified, which is 100 percent of the entire railway network in Odisha.
As many as 59 railway stations are being developed and upgraded under the Amrit Bharat Station scheme at an estimated cost of Rs 2300 crore. The major stations include Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Bolangir, Lingaraj Temple Road and Balasore.
Special measures have also been undertaken for passenger amenities. Wifi network is available at 234 railway stations in Odisha. 522 railway over-bridges and underpasses have been constructed in Odisha.
Odisha now has 6 Vande Bharat trains, connecting 17 districts of the state with major destinations. To boost regional connectivity, a modernised Vande Bharat express train is running between Malda to Bengaluru, connecting various stations in Odisha.
