The Rourkela Municipal Cooperation (RMC) destroyed over 100 kg ‘unhygienic’ ice cream following a raid on an illegal manufacturing unit at Industrial Estate in the town on Thursday.

According to sources, the ice cream factory had been operating in the area without any valid license for the last two years. Despite RMC’s repeated warnings, the unit had been preparing ice creams without maintaining hygiene.

The RMC officials along with Food Officers raided the ice cream factory and seized over 100 kg of ice cream, machines and other items before sealing the unit, sources informed.

“Acting on the allegations against Rainbow ice cream factory, we raided the unit which had been operating with any valid license. Besides destroying all the ice cream stored in the factory, we have sealed it,” said Ajit Patnaik, RMC assistant commissioner.

Swagatika Behera, food officer said, “There is no manufacturing, expiry date or batch number on the ice cream packets. The license number used on the packets is also fake. Acting on ADM’s directive, we have sealed the factory and seized over 100 kg of ice cream.”

“I don’t know why they are sealing the factory. The allegation of not maintaining hygiene is not true. Though we got notice several times, but we could not visit the office due to puja,” said an employee of the ice cream factory.
