Orissa High Court recommends open-air prisons in every district
The Orissa High Court has advised the Director General (DG) of Prisons-Odisha to establish open-air prisons in each district of the State, official sources said on Thursday.
According to sources, this advice follows an examination of successful implementations of similar systems in other parts of India. The Court urged to explore how such an initiative could be launched within Odisha.

In addition to this, the High Court has proposed the creation of a digital database of all prisoners, integrated with Artificial Intelligence (AI). This system is intended to streamline administrative processes and improve tracking within the prison system. Authorities have been given a week's time to submit a comprehensive report on this proposal.

The Home Department, in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC), has already formulated a plan for these advancements.
The State government has allocated Rs 2 Crore for the initial phase of this project, suggesting a notable investment in the digital transformation of its penal system.
