Orissa HC
The Orissa High Court has given a green signal for Hanuman Jayanti processions in Sambalpur while directing the state government to ensure necessary security arrangements. This decision comes following a public interest litigation (PIL) that sought a ban on the event due to fears of possible unrest.
In 2023, large-scale violence broke out during Hanuman Jayanti celebrations in Sambalpur, leading to clashes and significant property damage. Subsequently, authorities imposed a curfew and suspended internet services to restore order.
These events prompted fresh concerns ahead of this year’s celebrations, which fall on April 14, leading to the PIL seeking a prohibition on the procession.
During the hearings, the petitioner cited the high possibility of disturbances and called for the deployment of central security forces. They argued that past incidents justified extreme caution.
The state government, however, assured the court that all religious processions would be permitted while maintaining law and order. The central government also stated that there were no specific intelligence inputs suggesting potential unrest.
The High Court, after considering submissions from both parties, emphasized the need for the administration to take all necessary precautions to ensure peaceful celebrations. It also took note of the state government’s security measures and intelligence inputs for consideration.
With the court’s go-ahead, authorities are expected to deploy significant security personnel and implement preventive measures to avert any untoward incidents and maintain communal unity.
