Open drains turn death traps for commuters in Keonjhar
Despite massive uproars following many accidents, several uncovered drains pose serious threats to the commuters in Keonjhar.
As per reports, there is a 90 km stretch of drain in 21 wards under Keonjhargah Municipality. While some portions of the drain have been covered, many are still left open. As a result, so many accidents are taking place during the ongoing rainy season on a daily basis.
With heavy rain lashing, the rising water level in the open drains is causing waterlogging on roads. The open drains seem to have turned into death traps for commuters.
Though local residents have requested the concerned authorities to cover the drain with slabs umpteen times, it has fallen on deaf ears.
“Residents of the area are facing severe problems due to the open drains that have virtually turned into death traps. Apart from people, the lives of cattle are also under threat. Though we have requested the authorities about the issue several times, they are not paying any attention to our plea,” said Subhendu Patnaik, a resident of Keonjhargah.
“Apart from the commuters, the lives of little children are also under threat due to the open drains. Several accidents are happening due to this reason on a daily basis. I request the administration to address the issue as soon as possible,” said Indumati Mishra, Councillor of Ward No.6.
In response, Keonjhargah Municipality Chairman Niku Sahu said that, some portions of the drains have not been covered due to some issues in the tender process.
“Some portions of the drains have not been covered with slabs. We had passed a resolution in this regard and called for tenders. A lot of work has been completed. However, contractors are not participating in the tender process for the drain work in some wards. We will discuss the matter in a meeting and take steps to complete the work as soon as possible,” said Sahu.
