Onion price rise due to crop loss following incessant rainfall; situation to last for few days, says Odisha Minister

Odisha Food Supplies Minister Krushna Chandra Patra cited incessant rainfall as the cause for rising onion prices in the state. Speaking in Bhubaneswar, he attributed crop loss and short supply for the surge, with onions selling at Rs 60-70 per kg. The government plans potato and onion missions to tackle such crises, focusing on developing cold storage solutions.

At a time when the skyrocketing prices of onion are burning holes in the pockets of consumers across the State, Odisha Food Supplies & Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra on Saturday attributed incessant rainfall as the reason behind the price rise of the kitchen essential.

Speaking to reporters in Bhubaneswar, Patra said, “The price of onion has soared across the country. The incessant rain has resulted in the crop loss. There is a short supply of onion to the market, resulting in the price rise.”

“The situation is going to last for a few more days. Our government is coming up with potato mission, onion mission to address such crisis situations. Under these initiatives, new cold stores will come up and I am very much hopeful that this will solve issues,” Patra added.

Notably, the price of onion has gone up at various markets of Odisha with the kitchen essential being sold at around Rs 60-70 per kg. Similarly, the prices of ginger and garlic have also gone up in the state affecting common people.
